2017 Giuseppe Quintarelli "Alzero" Cabernet
97
Vinous
Review Date: 09/2025Minty herbs come together with split pine, graphite and gravel dust before settling on peppery wildberries as the radiant 2017 Alzero smolders up from the glass. It is elegant, seamless and silken, with masses of ripe raspberry and cherry tones underscored by autumnal spice and hints of dark chocolate, all guided by a wave of vibrant acidity. It finishes with dramatic length and heroic structure, leaving a staining of primary concentration and a pleasantly bitter tinge of clove that lingers impossibly long. This is an Alzero for the ages. Notes
The 2017 Giuseppe Quintarelli "Alzero" is a monumental Cabernet-based red crafted using the appassimento (drying) technique typically reserved for Amarone. The nose is explosive and "smoldering," blending peppery wild berries, minty herbs, and graphite with deep notes of dark chocolate and cigar box. On the palate, it is silken and seamless, masking its massive 16.5% ABV with vibrant acidity and a core of ripe raspberry and black cherry. The finish is heroic and structural, leaving a stained concentration of clove and mocha that lingers for minutes.
