Rich, dark-fruited character with dried berries, plums and hints of mocha, chocolate and grilled herbs. Full-bodied with a velvety, though slightly chewy texture and plush fruit. Long and broad finish.

Grand Napa's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain was this taster's favorite of the three wines tasted this time around. Despite being aged in 50% new French oak and 50% second-use barrels, it's not overly woody, instead letting the mountain-derived notes of pine needles and dark fruit come through, accented by just a hint of shoe polish. The wine is full-bodied and dense but not overly textural, with some slightly astringent tannins on the finish. (JC)

Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 20 months in 50% new French oak with the balance in two-year-old oak, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain shows more black fruits, iron, candied violets, and bouquet garni notes. It's a classic Howell Mountain that's medium to full-bodied, has a nicely concentrated, pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a good finish. It shows the hotter style of the vintage yet is nicely balanced and should have a decade of longevity. Drink 2025-2035.

Over the last five years or so, we’ve had the opportunity to offer several impressive wines from Grand Napa at exceptional prices. Time and again, they’ve proven to be powerful, structured, serious Napa Cabernets that have earned a loyal following among our customers. The 2022 Howell Mountain bottling is a classic reflection of this famed mountain terroir. Sourced from a small vineyard perched at 1,800 feet in rocky volcanic soils, the vines produce tiny clusters that yield a deeply concentrated, intensely flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is redolent of cassis, mulberry, and plum, with notes of dryland chaparral, graphite, and cigar box. Muscular yet refined tannins give it plenty of structure and power, but it never feels abrasive or monolithic. This is a wine you can enjoy now with a solid 30-minute decant, and it should continue to improve for at least the next decade in the cellar. At its usual $145 retail price, it sits comfortably alongside many top-class wines and more than holds its own. At our ludicrously discounted Insider’s Advantage price, nearly $100 below SRP, it simply blows the competition out of the water. Frankly, there is no real competition offering this level of Howell Mountain Cabernet at this price. Limited availability and limited-time pricing.
