2023 Wittmann "Estate" Spatburgunder

Decanter
Review Date: 11/2025Germany is becoming the next big thing for cool-climate Pinot Noir, and this shining example from Wittmann in the Rheinhessen is another classic. From the estate vines in the village of Westhofen on the biodynamically farmed estate. Elegant and savoury with a refined sense of Old World rusticity. Beautiful aromas of rose petals, forest floor, garden soils and sweet pipe smoke. The palate is a medley of juicy red berries, gorgeous notes of dried mint leaves, and sweet, smoky clove. Delicious.(CP)

The 2023 Estate Spätburgunder AP #10 from Philipp Wittmann is a lovely perfumed and nicely red fruity bottle of pinot noir. As I have mentioned in the past, this is mostly made from German pinot noir clones, though Philipp has planted some Burgundy cuttings in recent years and these are also blended into the cuvée these days. The wine is raised in used two hundred and fifty liter casks and the 2023 version comes in at 12.5 percent octane. The wine’s aromatic constellation offers up scents of red and black cherries, coffee bean, chalky soil tones, a touch of fresh thyme, just a whisper of oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, tangy and complex, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil inflection, moderate tannins and fine focus on the long and nicely balanced finish. This will need a bit of cellaring to soften up on the backend. It is a lovely bottle. (Drink between 2030-2050)
