Complex and subtle, with savory grilled herbs, black cherries and a mineral and balsamic undertone. Very juicy, poised and effortless with fresh, velvety tannins that flow through the palate. Nothing flashy nor flattering here, rather it’s fresh, dry and delicate with an ethereal and lingering finish. Precise, fine and “vulnerable.” Super-delicious and drinkable now, but will hold, too.

The 2018 Reserva comes from a late growing season and was produced with local varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and others from their 86 hectares of vineyards at 590 to 805 meters in altitude on limestone, sandstone and marl soils, now certified organic. The grapes were picked late with good ripeness and health and fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and open-top oak vats, then the wine matured in oak containers of different sizes for 22 to 24 months. This is a very good classical wine, serious and balanced, with very fine tannins, a balanced mouthfeel and enough power and concentration to be able to show elegance and nuance. It's very tasty, almost salty. (LG)

Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s most famous living winemakers, responsible for several of the most exciting wines produced across the country today, including Yjar Rioja and Matallana Ribero del Duero, but his story begins with Remelluri. This historic site in Rioja Alavesa was purchased by his father in 1968, and Telmo later went off to France as a young man to study winemaking, including stints at Cos d’Estournel, Jean-Louis Chave, and Domaine de Trévallon. Famously, the father and son had a falling out when Telmo returned to Spain to work at the family property. While Telmo was eager to explore the potential of single village and single vineyard wines, his father was more interested in producing lower-priced wines with fruit sourced from across Rioja. In response, Telmo instead created the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, which explores historic vineyards across Spain, and he quickly developed a reputation as a winemaker to watch. He and his father eventually came to an understanding, however, and Telmo returned to the family property in 2009. Since then, all the wines at Remelluri have been made with 100% estate-grown fruit – and the quality has never been better. And while Telmo has gone on to explore the potential of the estate as he always wanted, with the spectacular Yjar Rioja – sourced from a tiny single parcel on the property – as well as his single village “Lindes de Remelluri” wines, the flagship Remelluri Reserva remains a steadfast traditional expression of the overall character of the high-elevation site. Supremely elegant, this is a gorgeous example of a fine-boned Rioja. Framed by well-integrated oak notes of vanilla, toasted almond and cocoa nib, the wine is dominated by fresh red fruit and faintly earthy notes of button mushroom and wild herbs. So typical of the cooler climate of Rioja Alavesa, this such a sophisticated style of Rioja that perfectly balances tradition with a very modern sense of transparency of terroir. If you haven’t had a Remelluri Rioja in a while, I’d highly encourage revisiting this historic estate. It seems like every vintage just gets better and better, thanks to the steadfast determination and vision of Telmo Rodriguez.

Notes

Remelluri’s history begins in the 10th century, with wine production beginning in the 14th century, when monks cultivated vineyards near the monastery in the Sierra de Toloño mountains. The first documented reference to the estate appears in 1596 tax records from Laguardia, which mention its wine production. The modern winery was founded in 1967 when Jaime Rodríguez Salís purchased the abandoned vineyards and revived the historic estate. His work focused on restoring the original vineyards and returning them to production. In 1971, Remelluri released what is considered the first modern single-vineyard Rioja, distinguishing itself from the region’s traditional style of blended wines sourced from multiple areas. In 2009, Jaime’s children, winemaker Telmo Rodríguez and viticulturist Amaia Rodríguez Hernandorena, returned to lead the winery, marking a new phase for the estate. They work alongside Telmo’s longtime collaborator Pablo Eguzkiza, who trained at Château Pétrus. Remelluri’s vineyards lie on the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño above the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. With elevations between 500 and 950 meters, they are among the highest in Rioja. The vineyards face south and are sheltered from northern winds, producing distinctive mountain wines that differ from the typical Rioja wines grown on lower plains. The combination of stony, calcareous clay soils, Atlantic climate influence, cool nights, and warm days creates wines with structure, acidity and complexity.
