Savanna Distillery on Réunion Island has long been one of the rum world’s great hidden treasures, revered by devoted enthusiasts but rarely seen in meaningful quantities outside Europe. For decades the distillery has quietly produced some of the most intensely aromatic rums on earth, yet bottles have only occasionally trickled into the American market. The Lontan 57.5 offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Savanna’s most distinctive styles, a white Grand Arôme rum built for explosive character rather than subtlety. Produced from molasses sourced from the Bois Rouge sugar refinery, the wash undergoes an unusually long seven day fermentation before being distilled on Savanna’s copper column still. The result is a wildly expressive spirit packed with aromatic intensity, registering an impressive 882 grams of esters per hectoliter of pure alcohol. The nose leaps from the glass with powerful tropical fruit, overripe pineapple, banana skin and fermented citrus layered over saline olive brine, leather and a slightly smoky savory edge. Despite the intensity, the aromas remain surprisingly fresh and bright. On the palate the rum is bold and energetic, delivering waves of pineapple, green olive, citrus peel and musky tropical fruit balanced by briny minerality and a hint of vegetal spice. At 57.5% ABV it carries serious structure, yet the texture remains lively and precise. The finish is long and aromatic, with lingering fruit, salinity and savory complexity.
