2020 Pio Cesare "Mosconi" Barolo
99
James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2024Enchanting aromas of flowers like violets and lemon blossom, with raspberries and cranberries. Full-bodied yet focused and framed with a structure that builds on your palate and grows and grows, yet it remains fresh and vivid. The tannins are energetic and so, so long. A contemporary jewel. Fascinating. Thoughtful wine. Only the oldest vines are used in this from the 1940s and 1960s. (JS)

Notes
The 2020 Pio Cesare "Mosconi" Barolo is a contemporary jewel from Monforte d’Alba, sourced from the estate’s oldest vines (planted in 1947 and 1971) in one of the most prestigious crus of the region. The nose is enchanting and high-toned, offering a bouquet of violets, roses, and lemon blossom layered over raspberries, cranberries, and black cherries. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet remarkably focused, balancing a fleshy, creamy texture with energetic tannins and mouthwatering freshness. The finish is persistent and "dancing," echoing notes of blood orange, licorice, and sandalwood.
