2022 Frank Cornelissen "Munjebel CS" Terre Siciliane Rosso
96
Decanter
Review Date: 04/2023A north-facing amphitheatre of ungrafted vines planted in the 1920s situated in the lower, ‘Chiusa Spagnolo’ section of Contrada Zottorinoto at 620 metres above sea level provides the fruit for this superb wine. Like all of his reds, Frank utilises a long, 50-day maceration followed by ageing in large epoxy tanks. Fragrant cherry and hedgerow berry scents lead to a bright and saline palate with fleshy cherry. The mid-palate is stony and sapid, giving it lovely shape, and it finishes wonderfully fresh. Tank sample. (JB)

Notes
The 2022 Frank Cornelissen "Munjebel CS" (Chiusa Spagnolo) is a profound, single-vineyard Nerello Mascalese from ungrafted, 100-year-old vines. The nose is serious and complex, offering sour cherries, dried roses, and violet alongside spicy notes of star anise and blood orange. On the palate, it is often described as the most "Nebbiolo-like" of Frank’s crus—deep, structured, and tannic with a core of succulent red fruit and vibrant energy. The finish is extremely long, marked by a savory mineral depth. It is a "Grand Cru" expression that balances power with a sophisticated, old-vine elegance.
