2022 Barbacan "Sol" Valtellina Nebbiolo

The 2022 Barbacan "Söl" Valtellina Superiore Valgella is a breathtaking, artisanal expression of mountain Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) from Angelo Sega and his sons. Sourced from century-old vines planted on vertiginous, granite-and-schist terraced slopes in San Giacomo di Teglio, this wine is processed with zero modern artifice: spontaneous three-month skin maceration, followed by 12 months in 500-liter neutral tonneaux, bottled unfined and unfiltered. In the glass, it shows a pale, luminous garnet color. The nose is exceptionally chiseled and high-toned, offering aromas of blood orange, wild raspberry, bitter chinotto, and dried violets, deeply laced with a raw, iron-like ferrosity and smoky alpine herbs. On the palate, it is athletic, light on its feet, and intensely vertical. A piercing, laser-like acidity drives right through the crunchy red fruit, supported by tightly wound, fine-grained mountain tannins and a long, deeply mineral, salt-rimmed finish. It is a vibrant, living wine built on pure nervous energy and skeletal structure.
