The 2023 Barbacàn Rosso di Valtellina (often labeled as Rosso Alpi Retiche) is a brilliant, highly energetic introduction to the Sega family’s alpine-born Chiavennasca. Sourced from the lower, sandier terraced parcels around San Giacomo di Teglio, this entry-level cuvée is raised primarily in stainless steel and grandfathered concrete tanks for roughly eight months, capturing a more immediate, light-footed snapshot of the valley. In the glass, it pours a pale, vibrant, translucent ruby color. The nose is incredibly fresh and direct, showing a beautiful line of wild strawberries, sour red cherries, and pomegranate, closely intertwined with dried violet petals, white pepper, and a cool, defining streak of crushed rock and alpine brushwood. On the palate, the wine hums with pure nervous energy. It is athletic and light-bodied, matching its snappy red fruit with a sharp, vertical acidity and ultra-fine, crunchy mountain tannins. It finishes remarkably clean, mouth-watering, and highly savory, leaving a persistent, salt-rimmed finish of iron and citrus zest.
