I had this wine in a blind tasting - I have had it frequently, and have never failed to give it a perfect rating. At the same time, I have often mis-identified it in blind tastings as the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild. In this tasting, the wine was phenomenal. The color remains an opaque purple. The bouquet is beginning to develop secondary aromas of cedar and truffles to go along with its intense cassis, black-raspberry, blackberry, tarry, toasty personality. Exceptionally dense, concentrated, and full-bodied, this wine possesses layers of concentrated fruit that are beautifully balanced by the wine's sweet tannin and well-integrated acidity. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. A monumental Cabernet Sauvignon, it is one of the greatest wines made this century. Tasting after tasting continues to confirm this wine's surreal level of quality... My best guess for when it will reach full maturity is between 2000-2025. What a wine!

Unreal for its sheer hedonistic quality. Oozes rich and ripe fruit and sweet wood character, but doesn't taste overripe. Loaded with cassis and mineral flavors backed by tar and spice. Much thicker and darker in color than the '88, which is more elegant. In its history the winery has made no other Sassicaia with such massive tannins, yet the texture of the wine is supple. Made from very small yields.

So sweet! A truly exceptional wine. Very warm summer with very low yields but still less ripe than the same weather would produce nowadays, according to Sebastiano. 'If you had that weather now you'd get a wine at 16%.' This one was well over 13% for the first time in Sassicaia's then history. Still very deep and dense and shaded velvety look. So ripe and gorgeous on the nose still! Wonderful subtlety and velvetiness. Great balance and length and still wonderful depth even if there is a certain slight dustiness and dryness on the finish. Long and neat but very intense. Much more intense than the 1995 and 1975 for example - and great length. Really gorgeous! And still very vigorous. So much still to come! 19.5/20 points. Drink 1995-2020.

Notes

More recently, Antonio Galloni, writing in the Wine Advocate's "In the Cellar," noted: "This wine was impressive for its deep color, fresh aromatics and vibrant flavors. It offered attractive plummy fruit, cassis and toasted oak notes on a medium-bodied frame with excellent length and fine, silky tannins, conveying an impression of understated elegance. Readers fortunate enough to own this wine can look forward to at least another decade of prime drinking." (5/2006)
