1970 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Torn & Lightly Scuffed Labels)

Review Date: 06/2010This is a very fine mature Californian Cabernet from one its stalwarts. The nose is slightly volatile at first, but calms down with aeration to reveal notes of black olive, Chai tea, a touch of the old farmyard although it is not bretty in any way. Throughout its time in glass it seems to become sweeter and riper and this comes through on the palate, which is plump at first, become more tart as it interacts with the air. Sweet Dorset plum, umeboshi and wild strawberry towards the finish with just a faint hint of peppermint on the aftertaste. This has lasted very well. (NM)

Notes
93 points Robert Parker in Wine Advocate: "The 1970 has always been considered one of the great B.V. Private Reserves. Well-stored bottles continue to taste brilliantly, but they are fully mature and cannot be expected to last much longer. This wine performed spectacularly in this recent blind tasting (February, 1995), revealing a huge, complex bouquet of overripe, sweet, jammy, pruny fruit, cedar, herbs, spices, and fruitcake. Fat and rich, with unctuously-textured, chewy, expansive flavors, and a full-bodied finish, it was all this great wine can be." (06/1995)
