The 1990 Château Margaux is really beginning to hit its stride at age 31, soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, cedar and violets, framed by subtle hints of vanilla and spice. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and complete, its velvety tannins and ripe acids entirely cloaked in a lavish but vibrant core of fruit. This is an especially dramatic, fleshy rendition of Margaux, yet it remains impeccably balanced and has decades of longevity ahead of it. (WK)

This is a great wine and, like all the greats, it is always changing. In some recent showings it has been effusively plump and energetic, here it was more restrained and mineral than I had remembered. It is still profound, however, and with a bit of time in the glass it opens up to show extraordinary depth. There are some first hints of maturity and a subtle iodine note on the finish, but it is exquisite throughout and should continue to improve for years to come. (CC)

Vinous

The 1990 Château Margaux has an absolutely sublime bouquet with gravel-tinged black fruit, pressed violet and black truffle, much more opulent than its peers or indeed other vintages yet suffused with grace. The palate is beautifully balanced with plenty of freshness and succulence, pure black fruit, a keen line of acidity and a very harmonious finish. There is just a touch of Earl Grey on the aftertaste – a stupendous Château Margaux that will continue drinking well for many years. (NM)

Poured from bottle, this has classical notes of perfumed red roses and crushed chalk on the nose, set over a bed of dried cherries and curranty fruits. It is lifted by a note of menthol, and the overall impression is one of undeniable elegance. The palate opens with a tense and focused poise, polished and stylish, with an underpinning of finely grained tannins. It is tightly composed, tense and elegant, with a savoury evolution. Pure and delineated, and yet carrying appropriately evolved character, this is quite remarkable. It is enjoyable now and yet I still feel it needs more time to display all its true potential. Drink or hold.

Notes

100 points Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: "I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in February, and from my cellar in December, 2008, and it was remarkable how identical the wines smelled and tasted. It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100% new oak cask aging. Round and generous with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied richness that is fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. A sensational effort, it is one of the legendary wines made at Chateau Margaux." (06/2009)
