Another first for the Anonymous Wine Collective: a Syrah under our house label. And what an absolute beauty to kick things off. Sourced from one single hillside block of vines, that we've named "Envy Block" due to it's reputation as the sweet spot on this estate for producing the most potent and explosive Syrah. This very block is coveted by some of the most famed cult producers on the Central Coast and has produced multiple 100-point wines. Most wines sourced from this exact parcel retail between $80 and $160, many of them exclusive mailing-list offerings. Most wines sourced from this exact parcel retail between $80 and $160, many of them exclusive mailing-list offerings. Farmed with certified organic and biodynamic methods. The nose is wonderfully expressive with wild blackberry, black raspberry, dark cherry, dried herbs, violets, and hints of dusty earth. Beneath the exuberant fruit lies a compelling savory streak of cracked peppercorn, charred meat, and toasted exotic spice. Medium-plus in body, the wine carries a mouth-filling texture layered with fine tannins that provide impressive structure and length. The whole-cluster inclusion lifts the aromatics beautifully and keeps the wine fresh, energetic, and linear through the finish. This is a remarkably classy bottle of Syrah and, at this price point, an almost unbelievable value. I think it will resonate equally with lovers of savory Northern Rhône Syrah and fans of rich yet refined California Rhône-style wines. I couldn’t be happier with how this wine turned out - I only hope we made enough once people discover just how good it is for the money.

Hot off the wine press, the brand-new-and-already-going-fast Anonymous Envy Block Ballard Canyon Syrah! This is such a savory Rhone style Syrah I don't think I would believe it's from Ballard Canyon unless somebody told me. Northern Rhone Syrah is "the benchmark by which all global Syrah wines are measured" (Wine Folly), which is why California winemakers dedicated to the variety named themselves "The Rhone Rangers" in the 1980s (an official non-profit since 1998). The Anonymous Syrah has flavors of black olive, blackberry jam, violets, dried herbs, charcuterie, spice, and rotundone (think black pepper).

Brand new from this series! The luscious nose has scents of boysenberry, red licorice, lightly savory herbs and the merest whiff of white pepper. On the palate, the tannins are supple with deep red fruits, more boysenberry and black raspberry. At the back of the throat, there is a pleasant acidity and savory "bite". The oak is very integrated and there is just enough of it. The finish has a tip of the tongue chalk. The price is too good to beat. I'm looking forward to tasting it again in a few hours to see how it progressed. Two hours later, the fruit is quite plush with dark cherry and red cassis notes. The spice is more subdued and the tannis are smooth. Hello, barbecue!

Ryan Woodhouse has done it again with another incredible selection for the Anonymous Wine Collective. As someone who does not typically like Syrah, this wine is excellent! Coming from a prime block of vines in Ballard Canyon, this wine has smooth, polished tannins, and notes of dark cherry, raspberry, thyme, and a touch of oak on the palate. The perfect wine to have with dinner this summer, buy before it's gone.

Notes

Ballard Canyon is an American Viticultural Area in Santa Barbara County, established in 2013 and located in the Santa Ynez Valley between Solvang and Los Olivos. The region's cool Pacific breezes provide diurnal temperature swings of up to 40 degrees, conditions that help shape its cool-climate Syrahs.
