Reviewed January 2024The Mazis trumpets its grand cru status with dark plum and fig fruit and a more obvious density, structure, and length than one sees in the wines up to this point. Cyrielle says it is 'a bit of a big bear; very impressive then soft. The grapes come from the domaine's half-hectare of vines in Mazis-Bas, which were destemmed and fermented on native yeasts prior to ageing in cask. Although this is an intermediate step before the epic Clos-Saint-Jacques, it is not a wine to overlook – delicious in its own right.(CC)

The 2022 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru already has an irresistible nose: exquisite delineation, mineral-infused red berry fruit unfold in the glass with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins and veins of blue fruit. It is slightly powdery in texture towards the finish, time bringing a touch of earthiness. Quite mercurial in the glass, this Mazy will benefit from several years in bottle.(NM)

Reserved and rather backward on the nose, black cherry cordial, medicinal herbs and warm charcoal notes come forward reluctantly on the palate. The tannins are compact but remarkably smooth and seem to take a back seat to the high-toned acidity. This seems thoroughly intent on aging a long while before it is more forthcoming. This is a combination of fruit from Mazis-Haut and Mazis-Bas.

A fine and cheerful mid purple. The bouquet follows the rule of the year with its energised raspberry fruit, just a little bit rougher at the finish, but that is more of a Mazy thing. Fair length, this should blossom. Tasted Nov 2023.
