La Rinconada was planted in the mid-1990s directly adjacent to Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. The soils are oceanic in origin, Monterey shale and diatomaceous earth that seems to impart a distinctive minerality in the wines. The region is heavily influenced by cold winds off the Pacific Ocean that moderates temperatures and reduces vigor and yields from the vines making for very intensely flavored fruit. This small production wine, typically only sold at the winery and to mailing list customers offers a chance to taste world-class, single vineyard Chardonnay for a very modest price.
