The 2016 Ribolla Gialla Anfora is wonderfully lifted and finessed in style, entrancing the senses with a cascade of dusty dried flowers, pine shavings, ginger spice cookies, cloves and dried peaches. It is weighty upon entry with a stimulating core of zesty acidity to balance, as a savory wave of tart apples and apricots courses across the palate, leaving notes of cedar and sour citrus in its wake. Long and youthfully stern, the 2016 leaves a crunch of minerality and a sensation of inner incense while tapering off classically dry. This is a regal and refined vintage for the Ribolla Gialla Anfora. It was fermented with 20% whole clusters as the stems on the Ribolla Gialla were perfectly ripe. (EG)

Gravner's Ribolla ferments on the skins in amphorae and ages for several years in large oak barrels, producing what is the quintessential Italian skin-contact wine. Spicy and textural, with a hint of Sherry flor, it's remarkably fresh and vibrant. Citrus peel and blood orange notes are carried along on a slightly warming finish. Spellbinding. (JB)

Josko Gravner is the undisputed godfather of the modern amber wine movement, the visionary who famously abandoned modern technology to return to the ancient roots of winemaking. His wines from Oslavia, on the border of Slovenia, are the benchmark against which all other skin-contact wines are measured. Fermented on the skins in buried Georgian amphorae (qvevri) for months before spending six years aging in large oak casks, it smells ancient and alive all at once. The 2016 vintage, in particular, possesses a rare, crystalline clarity; it opens with a meditative bouquet of dried chamomile, honeycomb, and incense, yet there is a vertical energy here that feels younger than its years. On the palate, the signature "meaty" texture is present, but it’s the saline, mineral core hat provides the drive. This is the benchmark of the category, especially 2016.

Notes

Gravner Ribolla Gialla Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2016 is an iconic orange wine crafted by Josko Gravner, a pioneer of natural winemaking and one of the foremost champions of traditional and ancient methods in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Made from 100% Ribolla Gialla, a native grape of the region, this wine showcases Gravner's unwavering commitment to authenticity and terroir-driven winemaking. Sourced from the steep hills of Oslavia in the Collio area, the vines are grown in mineral-rich marl and sandstone soils, which impart a distinctive character to the wine. The 2016 vintage follows Gravner’s signature approach: the grapes undergo extended maceration on the skins in large Georgian amphorae, buried underground to allow for natural temperature control and slow extraction of color, tannins, and flavors. After several months of maceration, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for further aging, resulting in a wine of incredible complexity and depth.
