The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Baudines 1er Cru, which comes from higher-altitude vines, has a discrete, complex bouquet that unfurls with yellow plum, jasmine and light pressed white flower scents. The palate has superb delineation, a touch of flintiness and perfect, subtle reduction. The intense, citrus-fresh finish leaves a spicy residue in the mouth. This is one of the strongest cuvées from PYCM this year.(NM)

Note: from a purchase of fruit. Smoky aromas of Granny Smith apple, just sliced lemon and wet stone are trimmed in discreet wood. The lilting but impressively intense middle weight flavors brim with minerality while displaying equally good delineation on the chiseled and impressively long finale. This needs to develop better depth but it's very promising and very Baudines in character.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Mid yellow colour, a light reduction, steely and fine, less flesh on the palate then many, which is the style of the vineyard. A good crisp long finish. South facing spot. Picked 2nd September. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Oct 2024.

Aromas of orange oil, white flowers and toasty oak introduce the 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate that's quite fine-boned and lively. Pierre-Yves Colin has delivered another successful 2023 vintage, and almost everything I tasted remained un-racked on the lees, undergoing a long élevage in pursuit of more tension and complexity. As ever, picking tends to be on the early side with a view to retaining freshness. As readers may know, Colin's bigger cuvées are crushed and see four-hour press cycles, whereas smaller cuvées aren't crushed but see even longer press cycles lasting five or more hours. Vinification and maturation in barrel, with a heavy emphasis on larger-format barrels, follow. As I've written before, since moving to his new, much colder cellars in Chassagne-Montrachet's "zone artisanale," he finds his wines retain significantly more free sulfur dioxide for any given addition, so a touch less is being used.(WK)
