James Suckling
Reviewed May 2025A super-distinctive, big and concentrated wine that blends typical zinfandel ripeness and overt fruitiness with subtle sage, mineral and white pepper accents. It's complex and layered, with elevated alcohol but vivid acidity to balance it. Made from vines planted in the 19th century on a mountaintop site. Drink now or hold.

Decanter
Sourced from a late 1800s-era block of old vine Zinfandel planted in Monte Rosso Vineyard, Sonoma, this wine was aged for 18 months in a mix of 43% new French barriques, 19% new French puncheons, and 38% used oak. This wine immediately draws you in with elegant red-toned fruits—strawberry, cherry, and apple tarte Tatin—layered with a minty freshness. The palate is expansive and complex, featuring warming spice reminiscent of Sichuan pepper, seamlessly integrated with beautifully knit tannins that provide structure to the juicy, vibrant fruit. Surprisingly soft and silky red berry fruit gives way to a panoply of rich baking spices, cedar, clove, and earthy volcanic undertones. A dusty mineral backbone supports the plush fruit, while a scintillating acid structure adds grip and lift, carrying the full-bodied finish to impressive lengths. (JC)

This spicy and intriguing Zin brings aromas of roasted cherry, plum compote, cinnamon stick and star anise on the nose. The palate delivers a wave of raspberry-lemon acidity and flavors of baked berries, cassis and licorice that linger for a solid minute. (TC)
Notes
From the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, where head-trained, old-vine Zinfandel is rooted in iron-rich volcanic soils at elevation, this bottling captures the site’s signature intensity and structure. The warm, even 2022 vintage yields concentrated blackberry, raspberry compote, anise, and cracked pepper, framed by sturdy yet polished tannins and bright underlying acidity. Crafted in a bold but balanced style, the wine finishes long and savory, with a mineral edge that speaks clearly to Monte Rosso’s rugged mountain terroir.
