This surpassingly lovely wine almost overwhelms with seductive aromas of ripe mulberry and plum, with hints of rose petal, liquorice and smoke. The texture is rich and silky yet dense, with firm tannins underscored by a brilliant burst of limestone minerality that draws the wine to a marvellous conclusion. The grapes are from the 0.6ha parcel in Ruchottes du Bas that the domaine has farmed for almost 50 years. They were fermented with 23% whole clusters this year and are ageing in cask (mostly new) to produce this riveting example of a sublime terroir.

If I had to nominate Mugneret-Gibourg's best grand cru, it would likely be the Clos Vougeot; but this year, it is the 2023 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru that appears to reign supreme, bursting with aromas of plums, rose petals, sweet spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's suave and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, sinewy tannins and a saline finish. (WK)

A fine deep purple. Glycerol rich legs. 22% whole bunch vinification, barely showing. This is richer than usual, and indeed is the ripest wine in the cellar, slightly losing some of the dainty lattice-work in favour of more muscle, with a firmer finish. There is no real feeling of heat though and the deep red cherry fruit remains a treat.

The 2023 Ruchottes-Chambertin from Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg is another stellar example of the vintage. The wine offers up a complex bouquet of cassis, black cherries, grilled meats, espresso, a lovely base of black minerality, a touch of pretty spice tones and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and reserved in personality, with a sappy core, fine-grained tannins, lovely focus and balance and a very long, complex and promising finish. Fine juice in the making.
