Reviewed February 2024
Nero d'Avola is so often buoyantly juicy, and that can work, but it’s nice to see iterations where the fruit is expressed in a more savoury light. This captures that well. Sure, there are still some bright-fruited black cherry and raspberry notes, but there’s a crusting of spice, an earthiness, some anise, and a lack of overt fruit sweetness, with a dry tannic draw further refining the finish. It works well. (ME)

Full-weighted, pulpy and with no dearth of freshness. A joyous glass of wine, laced with lilac, musk, purple pastille and dried herb, the sweetness clotted across the sassy finish. Best, with a chill. (NG)

Notes

Maxwell Wines, established in 1979 by Mark Maxwell, is a family-owned winery, meadery, and restaurant located in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Built into a limestone hill, the estate celebrates the region’s Mediterranean climate through a diverse range of varieties grown on its own vineyards, including classic McLaren Vale Shiraz and Grenache alongside Italian varieties such as Nero d’Avola. Well suited to the region’s warm, sunny conditions, Nero d’Avola thrives in McLaren Vale and has become a standout expression of the estate. Maxwell’s Nero d’Avola reflects a balance of Old World heritage and New World fruit purity, displaying vibrant aromas and flavors of red cherry, pomegranate, and bramble fruit. Bright acidity and soft, savoury tannins make the wine both food-friendly and enjoyable on its own. Winemaking typically incorporates a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel, preserving fresh fruit character while adding subtle texture and structure A jewel of Sicilian viticulture, the variety feels right at home in McLaren Vale, where it balances freshness with generous fruit intensity.
