The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguette derives from stonier soils that are richer in active calcium. It's a medium to full-bodied, chiseled and saline red evocative of cherries, cassis, rose petals and spices. If Aux Chaumes will be a charmer out of the gates, Les Dames Huguette will reward at least a few years' patience. Sébastien Cathiard is always a late harvester, and in 2020 he began picking on September 8, the same date he began his 2018 harvest. Alcohol levels range between 13.9% and 15% for his Côte d'Or holdings (quite a bit higher than in 2018), and these are rich, powerful wines that maintain freshness but which are certainly among the headier 2020s that I tasted. As readers will remember, the rudiments of the contemporary Cathiard approach are simple: meticulous viticulture—though not, I should add, especially low yields—and careful sorting, followed by complete destemming, macerations of 20-30 days and maturation in barrels, principally from Tonnellerie Rémond (drawing on the Tronçais, Allier and Jupilles forests in equal proportions), from some 15-18 months. The big development at this address is that in 2019 Sébastien Cathiard expanded the domaine from 4.6 hectares to fully 8.35 hectares. So, a thirsty world will be delighted to know that there will be some more-affordable wines from this sought-after address. In 2020, those Hautes-Côtes bottling

A slightly more deeply pitched nose grudgingly reveals its blend of plum, dark berries and subtle earth and floral wisps. There is again very good vibrancy and delineation to the more mineral-driven flavors that possess a chalky texture on the youthfully austere finale. This is an excellent Bourgogne and also worth your consideration.*Burghound Outstanding!*

30-70 year old low trained vines making up 1.45ha in several plots. Compared to Aux Charmes, Les Dames Huguettes has an equally deep or possibly even more concentrated purple colour, with a slightly richer fruit, more complete on the nose. This follows through on the palate with an extra deep cherry intensity that is more consistent across the palate. Tasted Nov 2021.

The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguette has a sweet plummy, confit-like bouquet with copious dark cherry fruit mixed with cassis and blueberry. The palate is ripe and candied, nicely structured, plush with dark chocolate and caramel towards the finish.(NM)
