This is one of the most fascinating rescue stories in Italian viticulture. In the 1920s, a man named Antonio Longanesi discovered a single, unknown vine climbing the branches of an old oak tree in the swamplands of Emilia-Romagna. He propagated it, saving the grape from total extinction. Today, that grape is known as Uva Longanesi, and the wine made from it is trademarked as Bursôn—the historical nickname of the Longanesi family. Tenuta Randi is one of the key pillars of the Consorzio Il Bagnacavallo, a small, fiercely dedicated group of Romagnolo producers protecting this ultra-rare variety. Grown in the alluvial plains of Ravenna, where the Adriatic Sea influences the climate, the Longanesi grape is notoriously thick-skinned and rustic, demanding immense patience both in the vineyard and the cellar. To tame its massive structure, the "Selezione" tier often borrows techniques from Amarone, utilizing a partial drying of the grapes (appassimento) and extended aging in oak. It is dark, brooding, and powerfully structured.

The 2020 Randi Burson “Randi Selezione” Ravenna IGT is a wine that looks like a void and tastes like a mouthful of ripe forest berries. It’s imbued with violets and all sorts of fresh forest notions: coniferous trees, wet stones, damp earth, pure wilderness. Dark, inky, and luscious, it makes me feel like a foraging bear, and I’m ravenous for more. With real energy and lift, it’s rich and full-bodied but invigorating at the same time. I’ve never tasted anything quite like it, which makes sense when you learn that it’s made from Uva Longanesi, a little-known indigenous variety from Emilia-Romagna. Approximately 70% of the fruit is dried for 60 days prior to fermentation, then it spends 24 months in French oak tonneaux. That appassimento step is everything here. It’s a labor of love that clearly comes across in the glass. This is the kind of wine I love discovering—a wine that takes me places, stirs my imagination, and makes me think about who I want to drink it with. It’s distinctive without being weird or difficult, full of flavor without losing its sense of place, and it over-delivers for the price. Hat tip to our Italian wine buyer Orazio Campoli. I’ve never bought as much Italian wine in my five years at K&L as I have since he took over the program.

Notes

The 2020 Randi Burson "Randi Selezione" Ravenna IGT is a powerful, estate-grown red made from 100% Uva Longanesi, an indigenous grape rescued from extinction in Emilia-Romagna. To achieve its characteristic depth, 70% of the grapes are dried for 60 days before fermentation. It presents a deep garnet color with intense aromas of black cherry, plum, leather, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, balancing ripe dark fruit with silky tannins and a persistent, savory finish. After aging for 24 months in French oak tonneaux and another 12 months in the bottle, it is an ideal match for slow-roasted game, aged cheeses, or rich pasta dishes like ragù alla romagnola.
