Very attractive aromas of red cherries, mushrooms and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm and integrated tannins and a vivid, subtle, fruity finish. A lovely young Brunello that you can enjoy now or age for many years to come. Drink or hold. (JS)

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo bursts from the glass with a vivid blend of crushed raspberries and cherries, a whiff of allspice and candied rose. It is elegant in feel, silken and smooth with tantalizing acidity and a dominating core of ripe red fruits that adds impact. The finish is grippy and long, potent with fine-grained tannins and a slight citrus tinge that pinches at the cheeks. This classy Brunello is built for the cellar.

Black cherry and black currant flavors are the main themes in this intense red, with iron and wild herbs adding complexity. Balanced and vibrant, with resonant tannins guarding the long aftertaste. This feels more modern in style, with an emphasis on bright fruit. (BS)

An assemblage of 20 to 30 plots, Castelgiocondo’s Brunello is blended after three years of ageing in a combination of used barriques and large casks. The 2021 opens slowly with incense- and pepper-infused plum and red berries. It is well padded but not overly dense, showing generous rather than opulent fruit. Flavours of cherry skins and blood orange are magnified by radiant acidity, and dark currants burst on the finish. Still tightly knit with polished, sandy-textured tannins, it should age gracefully. Staff Reviews

The 2021 CastelGiocondo is a masterclass in power and elegance. It pours a brilliant, deep garnet and leaps from the glass with complex, commanding aromatics—crushed black cherry, ripe plum, Mediterranean scrub, sweet tobacco, and a beautifully savory streak of leather and crushed stone. On the palate, it is expansive and muscular, driven by dense, finely-knit tannins and a vibrant, mineral-laced acidity that keeps the sheer weight of the fruit perfectly in check.
This is a serious, aristocratic expression of Sangiovese Grosso. While its impeccable balance makes it tempting to open right now with a long decant and a rich cut of meat, this has the architectural framework to evolve beautifully in the cellar for the next fifteen to twenty years. It is an absolute benchmark for the vintage and a towering achievement from one of Tuscany’s most legendary families.
Notes
The 2021 CastelGiocondo Brunello is powerful and multifaceted. The nose offers blackcurrant and violet with complex layers of star anise and roasted coffee. On the palate, it is full-bodied and "crunchy," balancing dense fruit with firm, ripe tannins and a persistent balsamic finish. It is a structured, long-aging wine that beautifully captures the energy of the 2021 vintage.
