Reviewed January 2026You can just get lost in the nose on the intensely fragrant Roagna 2020 Gallina thanks to its scents of blue flower, pine forest, wild berry and dark spice. The palate is all about elegance, featuring tart cherry, bitter orange, licorice, wild herb and truffle. It’s well balanced, with fresh acidity that keeps it lifted and polished tannins. There’s ample ripe fruit and a supple texture in this fluid red, featuring cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, mineral, tar and underbrush flavors. Vibrant and long, this is elegant overall, the driving acidity defining its linear profile. Though enjoyable now, this will come together in a few years. Best from 2028 through 2045. 384 cases made, 50 cases imported.

The 2020 Barbaresco Gallina is the most open-knit of the Barbarescos in Luca Roagna's range. Crushed flowers, mint, kirsch, sweet red cherry and cinnamon all life from the glass. Soft, silky contours add to the wine's considerable charms. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. (AG)
