At 380m, Oddero’s 0.45ha are at the highest reaches of Brunate, where laminated Sant’Agata Fossil marls surface. Owned by the Oddero family since the ‘70s, the small plot was originally blended into the classic Barolo until 2004, when it was first bottled separately. Allying ample ripeness with palpable freshness, the latest edition simmers with both substance and tension. It's a beguiling fusion of wet forest floor, dried red plum, star anise and sandalwood. Sinewy tannins sculpt the core, and racy acidity carries this through to its persistent, heathery conclusion. (MM)

The Oddero 2021 Barolo Brunate comes from half a hectare of vines, and only 2,400 bottles were created. It is recognized by a dusty mineral note of crushed limestone or aspirin that appears quite prominent in this balanced vintage. It adds a dusty sensation to the bouquet that then transfers to the elegantly powdery tannins. I love the Brunate in this vintage, with its lasting sensations of dried mint and violet. I love its vertical force and that etched mineral quality that adds contouring and dimension. The Brunate ages in botte grande for 24 months. (ML) 97+

The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another stellar wine in this range of magnificent 2021s from Oddero. Dark and intensely balsamic, this is an archetype of Brunate. Black cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol, spice and new leather open with reticence. Today, I find the 2021 rather compact. Then again, this is Brunate. Readers will want to give this a few years in the cellar at a minimum. (AG)

Pouring a deeper, saturated ruby red color, the 2021 Barolo Brunate is a bit more reserved but seductive on the nose with aromas of fresh leather, black raspberries, balsamic herbs, and mossy earth. The palate also takes on more sapidity, with a more balanced, rounded feel, plush, ripe tannins, even acidity, and a long finish closing with hints of black truffle. It’s a more brooding wine that’s going to improve over the coming 15-20 years. (AF)

Brunate is fascinating because it sits in La Morra, which we associate with elegance, but it behaves with the power of a Serralunga wine. It is the "masculine" side of the village. In 2021, Oddero’s Brunate is a powerhouse of balsamic complexity. The fruit profile shifts darker here, but it is immediately lifted by a huge wave of wild mint, eucalyptus, and truffle. On the palate, it has more weight and density than the Villero, but the acidity of the vintage keeps it from feeling heavy. It is plush, velvety, but with a firm, saline finish that keeps it fresh. A flashier style of Barolo that can be the perfect first transitional bottle if you are coming from Napa and similar.

Notes

Oddero’s Brunate Barolo 2021 is a refined and powerful expression of this esteemed La Morra and Barolo cru, showcasing depth, structure, and elegance. The nose reveals layers of ripe red cherry, black raspberry, and dried rose, intertwined with notes of sweet spice, tobacco, and crushed stone. The palate is rich yet precise, offering vibrant red fruit, earthy minerality, and firm, finely chiseled tannins, all lifted by fresh acidity. A long, polished finish lingers with nuances of balsamic, cedar, and licorice.
