The Oddero 2019 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca has a savory note of tobacco that frames dark cherry fruit and blackcurrant. There is a hint of Darjeeling tea or fragrant rose with mildly toasted spice. This wine definitely offers ample power with a 15% alcohol content, and it feels quite rich on the palate. The 2021 vintage is superior in my view, but 2019 will appeal to those who like more meat on those Nebbiolo bones. This wine will be released in September 2025. (ML)

The 2019 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca is every bit as haunting in its beauty as it was last year. A Barolo of dynamic energy and nuance, the Bussia is sublime. Cedar, incense, blood orange, kirsch, rose petal and dried herbs confer classicism. The 2019 is, quite simply, sublime. That's all there is to it. (AG)

Oddero’s holdings in Bussia are centred around the Mondoca hill within the hamlet of Dardi. The 1.1ha monopoly faces south to southwest on calcareous-rich marl. Its generous warmth is tangible in this rich, robust Barolo. Scents of fennel, macerated cherry and orange peel lead. Salted plum and tar give the ample palate an umami character. It spreads out with an impressive volume of texturing tannins. Succulent acidity kicks in towards the backend and bitter cocoa accents fill out the finish. (MM)

While the 2021s are about electric energy, the 2019 Riserva is about classic, structural power. Sourced from the upper part of the Mondoca vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, this is not a "fruit bomb." At this stage, the fruit has receded to reveal the soul of the soil: tar, licorice root, dried herbs, and scorched earth. It is incredibly savory. On the palate, it is full and enveloping, with the significant tannic mass typical of Monforte. If you love Barolo with "grip" and earthy depth, this is the benchmark. What a wine, drink now, in a year or in 20. This will deliver at each stage.

Notes

Oddero’s Bussia Mondoca Barolo Riserva 2019 is a powerful and deeply structured expression of this renowned Monforte d’Alba cru, showcasing depth, precision, and longevity. The nose is layered with ripe dark cherry, black plum, and dried rose, intertwined with notes of licorice, tobacco, and iron-rich earth. The palate is bold yet refined, offering concentrated red and black fruit, firm tannins, and a distinctive mineral core, all balanced by vibrant acidity. A long, resonant finish lingers with nuances of balsamic, cedar, and exotic spice.
