2024 Riff Pinot Grigio delle Venezie
March is the season of renewal, and Riff is the perfect project to illustrate how a fresh perspective can revitalize a classic category. While the label says "Pinot Grigio," the pedigree here is pure royalty. This is a passion project from Alois Lageder, the legendary biodynamic pioneer of Alto Adige who has spent decades proving that Northern Italian whites can be world-class. Lageder created Riff to prove that affordable Pinot Grigio doesn't have to be industrial plonk—it can have a soul and a story. The name "Riff" (German for Reef) is a direct nod to the geological history of the Dolomite foothills where these vines grow. Millions of years ago, these majestic, jagged peaks were actually living coral reefs in a prehistoric ocean. That ancient marine heritage is the defining feature of the terroir, leaving behind fossil-rich limestone soils that impart a distinct, saline backbone to the wine. By sourcing fruit from trusted growers in the foothills of the northeastern Alps who adhere to strict sustainable protocols, Lageder ensures that the wine expresses this unique "alpine-mediterranean" microclimate. It’s a masterclass in sourcing and terroir, resulting in a wine that is crisp, mineral-driven, and vibrant—a true reflection of the ancient stone it grows on

Notes
The 2024 Riff Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is a crisp, certified organic white curated by the legendary Alois Lageder. Sourced from limestone-rich Alpine foothills, its name "Riff" (German for reef) pays homage to the ancient coral reefs that formed the region's fossil-filled terroir. The wine features a brilliant straw-yellow color with green tints and a fine, fruity nose of green apple, white peach, and citrus zest. On the palate, it is light-to-medium bodied and remarkably precise, balancing juicy orchard fruit with a vibrant, saline minerality and a dry, mouth-watering finish. Vinified entirely in stainless steel with four months on the fine lees, it maintains a clean, high-energy profile that makes it an ideal aperitif or companion for fresh seafood and light pasta dishes.
