An exuberantly spicy nose of exotic jasmine tea, dried orange peel, black cherry, plum and soft wood precedes lilting and ultra-fine flavors that retain excellent precision on the powerful finish that tightens up markedly on the firm, long and very serious finale. The 2023 Echezeaux Grand Cru is one of the bigger, more exuberant wines in the cellar, bursting with aromas of smoky plums, smoked duck, spices and orange zest. Full-bodied, broad and fleshy, it's layered and concentrated, with a long, saline finish. Domaine Dujac's 2023 harvest began with Les Folatières on September 1, followed by a five-day pause before resuming on September 6. As elsewhere, yields were generous, and alcohol levels range between 13.3% and 14%. The domaine's more spacious and better temperature-controlled new winery was surely an asset, and the 2023s are shaping up nicely, offering up expressive fruit as well as plenty of underlying structure. Readers, of course, will be familiar with the outlines of the Dujac approach to producing red Burgundy: organic farming, fermentation with a predominance of whole clusters (with some 20% to 30% destemmed this year) and élevage in barrels largely sourced from Tonnellerie Rémond.(WK)

The 2023 Echézeaux from Domaine Dujac was absolutely resplendent and red fruit this year, which is a bit out of character, as I often think of this wine as one of the most consistently black fruity wines in the Seysses family’s lineup. The bouquet is gorgeous, delivering a constellation of red plums, raspberries, cocoa powder, a beautiful base of soil tones, woodsmoke, cedar and a refined mix of Vosne spices in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, tangy and sappy at the core, with superb soil signature, fine-grained tannins, seamless balance and a long, focused and very precise finish. Great juice.
