The 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is a breathtakingly brilliant example of the vintage. The wine is pure, precise and stunning in its potential, with its aromatic constellation wafting from the glass in a beautiful blend of apple, pear, fresh lime, a fine base of limestone minerality, apple blossoms, vanillin oak and a topnote of fresh almond. On the palate the wine is crisp, complex, precise and very deep at the core, with a full-bodied format completely defined by its underlying minerality. The wine has superb focus and balance, a superb structural chassis and enormous backend lift and grip. Stunning juice. 2033-2075+.

The 2024 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a delectable nose not dissimilar to the Criots this year, beautifully defined with hints of oyster shell surfacing with time, quite Zen-like but paradoxically conveying real presence. The palate is very well balanced with wonderful poise. Impressive depth and concentration considering the growing season with a sprightly finish that fans out in a cool, calm and collected fashion. This is an excellent Bâtard-Montrachet that has its nose in front of the Criots.(NM)

Swashbuckling in its dazzling aromatic display, this starts with golden kiwi, cherimoya, lemon sherbet, ginger tea, warm pastry and a hint of fern. Beautifully pure and intense on the palate, the layered flavors are lightly plumped by smooth glycerol and invigorated by crackling acidity. Posh and polished, this should make for glacial aging, and time will definitely elicit more from this stellar wine. The Fontaines have four parcels with vines ranging in age from 30 to 80 years.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "3 parcels but most comes from a parcel near Criots and another near Puligny, half each of this cuvée in Pulingy and Chassagne Not the largest nose today, but a vibrancy of complex aromatics, even a hint of smoke and florals. Large in scale – such depth – clearly another level. Generous but still with exquisite balance." (01/2026)
