Very mineral nose, showing crunchy blue fruits, crushed stones and a touch of violets. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with focused, delineated tannins, tight fruit and a firm finish. Great expression from this singular region. Drink now or hold. (JGA)

92+ points. The 2022 Parada de Atauta was produced with 85% grapes from ungrafted vines in the Atauta Valley and the rest from grafted vines in the villages of Ines and Olmillos. It was bottled after 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% of them new, and a further five months in concrete; but this year, there's a lot of 5,300 liters that aged exclusively in oak vats and didn't touch a barrel. It's ripe without excess, with classical notes of berries, flowers and herbs. (LG)

Parada de Atauta is the biggest-volume red in the Dominio de Atauta portfolio and represents impressive value for money given that it's sourced from 90-year-old vines in the San Juan and Inés Valleys. Showing rosemary and wild thyme aromas, it has good balance, scented 20% new oak, plum and red cherry flavours and savoury tannins.

Dominio de Atauta is careful not to label Parada de Atauta as a second wine, but rather an entirely separate wine made from specific parcels of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) at the estate. The vine age in these parcels is a bit younger than those that are destined for the flagship wine, though this feels like splitting hairs – a mere 90-120 years of age for the Parada de Atauta versus 120-160 years for the Dominio de Atauta. The soils are also slightly sandier, leading to more dominant red fruit notes of juicy red plum, red cherry and wild raspberry. The Parada ages for 14 months in 20% new French oak barrels, before being transferred to concrete vats for 5 months before bottling. The resulting wine is stunning, with supple, fine-grained tannins and an impressive amount of concentration of both fruit and more savory notes. So elegant and refined, this is a lovely example of the cooler side of Ribero del Duero, showcasing subtle power and a lot of finesse.
This is Ribera del Duero with a beautiful sense of restraint. The nose offers dark cherry, blackberry, crushed violets, and a touch of graphite, while the palate balances ripe fruit with savory earth and subtle spice. There’s plenty of concentration here, but what stands out most is the freshness and precision—nothing feels heavy or overworked. Fine-grained tannins frame the wine nicely, carrying notes of black plum, dried herbs, and mineral-driven complexity through a long, polished finish. A serious and expressive Tempranillo that delivers both power and elegance in equal measure.

Big and ripe nose at the very outset, but I am not deterred, there's this kind of hibiscus floral note in the very back that has hooked its finger into my nose and keeps me riveted in place. Really plush with cherry, bramble-fruit, plum, and some really pretty purple flowers. The palate is big and just a little bit chewy, there's definitely a firm grip of tannin but nothing that fat can't fix. There's my tip for today, if your wine is too tannic just eat some butter before each sip, it'll be fine. You might get a tummy-ache depending on how much butter you eat, though. There's really nice fruit, but also some good mid-palate umami notes that kind of slip between the fruit, like a savory little ninja. The finish is lingering and full of barrel spice and oak toast with little bits of fruit still hanging around the edges but it's a very barrel-forward finish. I really enjoyed this, all this Atauta wines have been great.

Notes

Located in the village of Atauta, in the coolest, highest-elevation eastern section of Ribera del Duero, Dominio de Atauta boasts an average vine age of 85 years, with many pre-phylloxera vines topping 120 years. Each of these ancient vines is extremely low yielding, with less than a bottle per vine of finished wine – a miniscule amount in today’s world that often prioritizes quantity over quality. Extreme temperature differences, with very hot summers and very cold winters, further limits yields as springtime frost is always a danger. The result is wines of stunning concentration and complexity, balanced by fine-grained tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. The 2022 vintage in Ribero del Duero was very dry and warm, but the eastern location of Dominio del Atauta handled the conditions with ease not seen elsewhere in the appellation. The wines have a gorgeous, ready-to-drink quality, yet are firmly structured and marked by a fresh acidity resulting from the high elevation.
