Elegant and powerful, the Clos Saint-Jean from Michel Niellon offers pronounced aromas of nectarine, peach, and quince with notes of smoke and spice. The texture has surprising density, impressive depth of flavour, and great balancing acidity that carries the wine to an impressively long finish. The grapes are from domaine-owned parcels at the top of the slope; they were gently pressed after careful sorting, fermented in barrel (25% new), and are now finishing their ageing in tank.(CC)

Vinous

The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 1er Cru is very aromatic and generous on the nose, with scents of white flowers, mirabelle and light beeswax aromas that blossom in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, with more body and depth than the Maltroie. Really good mineralité in this Clos Saint-Jean, very persistent in the mouth; this is exactly where the vintage excels in the Côte d'Or. Recommended.(NM)

Extremely lean and lithe with searing lemony freshness, chamomile tea and tart yellow currants adding to the perky palate. Feather weight, the lightness of the vintage is clear in the moderate fruit depth as well as the fleeting finish. These are being replanted bit by bit, as are so many vines in this domaine, where the inability of the rootstock 161-49B to deal with dry vintages has wiped out so many vines.

They were thinking about pulling this plot out but it has come through the wetter conditions of 2024 very well, so they may keep it going. Clean pale lemon. The bouquet is quite reticent. Concnetrated white fruit, plenty of energy here, the fruit well married with the oak, fair length. A little extra here in 2024. Drink from 2029-2033. Tasted Oct 2025.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "On high, near the quarry – two parcels – one in CSJ and the other in the climat below of Rebichets. Again with pinot – they pulled out their pinot as there was disease, but when it comes time to replant, they will still replant pinot.A more vertical nose – the high tones are floral but with extra stony accents. Ooh – larger, rounder in the mouth – such extra flavour complexity. Great finishing again – I have found some previous wines more delicious, but the overall wine here is quite the most complete so far…"(11/2025)
