Review Date: 05/2026

The 2023 Hermitage is composed of 80% Les Grandes Vignes (upper slopes near La Chapelle) and 20% Rocoules and was matured in barriques with around 95% new oak. It reveals aromas of dark berries, spices, pepper, licorice and thyme, offering a deep and complex profile. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s built around a concentrated core of fruit with marked tannic density, enhanced by a velvety textural amplitude derived from malolactic fermentation in barrel. Note: No Autrement cuvée was produced in this vintage. (YC)

A textural, focused and refined Hermitage with dark cherries, roasted meat and warm spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Broad but in control, with a pulpy stream of berries and spices at the center. Structured but balanced and harmonious, with controlled power. Long, flavorful finish. Drink or hold.

Dark and fleshy, the 2023 Hermitage Cuvée Emilie starts to hum with cured meat, smoky bacon, blackberry jam and graphite dust. Richly weighted and round, the 2023 is wrapped around soft tannins, easing the last impressions with juicy persistence on the focused finish. Not quite at the same height as the stunning 2022, but coming close. (NG)

Notes

The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Émilie and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Hermitage. Émilie oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. We were excited to add them to our lineup of Direct Imports a couple of years ago, especially once Jeb Dunnuck of Wine Advocate proclaimed, "This estate needs to be on every reader’s short list." The wine is 100% Syrah with fruit coming from two sites - Les Grandes Vignes, with vines averaging 40 years of age planted on granitic soils, and Les Rocoules, with vines over 80 years of age planted on alluvial soils. It is fermented in large oak vats and ages in new oak barrels for 15-18 months.
