2018 Trimbach "Reserve Personnelle" Pinot Gris
94
John Gilman
Review Date: 05/2026The Trimbach family’s Pinot Gris “Réserve Personnelle” bottling is made from their oldest vines in their best parcels planted to this grape variety. The old vines have accrued just a bit more ripeness in 2018 and the wine, thus comes in at 14.5 percent octane this year. It offers up a refined bouquet of peach, tangerine, a touch of pineapple, a touch of pecan nuttiness, wheat chaff, a superb base of gently chalky soil tones and a topnote of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex with great depth of fruit at the core, fine soil signature, lovely acids and grip, seamless balance and a long, gently sweet finish. The heat of the summer of 2018 necessitated a touch of residual sweetness being left in this wine in this vintage, but it works beautifully and is highly preferable to a fifteen-plus percent alcohol wine, if it had been fermented to complete dryness. This is a beautiful bottle, with the sweetness level of a light Spätlese, great depth and stunning length and grip. 2026-2055.
