Review Date: 11/2025The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is darkly perfumed, evolving with nuances of dried rose, sage, cedar shavings and balsamic-tinged black cherries. It is beautifully balanced with silken depths of ripe red and blue fruits elevated by cooling acidity and a slightly spicy twang toward the close. The sweetest tannins imaginable frame the finish as this tapers off structured and long yet still perfumed and pleasurable. There's a lovely harmony here that keeps me coming back to the glass, even as the 2021 requires extensive cellaring.(EG)

Focused by vivid acidity, with lift from finely wrought tannins, this expands on the palate, with eucalyptus and mineral accents to the long aftertaste of red fruit and savory elements. Forest floor, violet, Mediterranean brush and spice aromas come to the forefront along with a whiff of leather. Linear and elegantly structured, the full-bodied, linear palate features ripe Morello cherry, blackberry, graphite and star anise before closing on an orange zest note. It is a common mistake to associate the southern sector of Montalcino (Sant'Angelo in Colle) exclusively with solar power and heavy extraction. In a perfectly balanced vintage like 2021, Talenti dismantles this preconception, giving us a Brunello that vibrates.
The nose has an immediate balsamic drive. You won't find sweet or overripe fruit here, but rather a core of "crunchy" cherry and blood orange, wrapped in notes of Mediterranean scrub (macchia), wild mint, and a distinct earthy minerality.
On the palate, it is straight, tense, and vertical. It completely bypasses that mid-palate heaviness that sometimes afflicts the southern quadrant; instead, it drives forward with an enviable saline tension and nerve.
