The palate is polished and open-knit, with good freshness adding lift and energy to an otherwise ample and approachable expression. Produced in a generous quantity of approximately 156,000 bottles, this is a broadly accessible Brunello designed for early enjoyment.
Fattoria dei Barbi maintains one of Montalcino’s most compelling library-release programs, offering wines that have been intentionally held back to mature in the estate’s historic cellars. These bottles are periodically re-corked to ensure longevity before release. (ML)

The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Fattoria Dei Barbi pours a bright red hue and is expressive and lifted on the nose, with wild raspberries, preserved strawberries, pressed violets, and sweet sage. The palate is medium-bodied and savory, with a bright spine of acidity, ripe tannins, salty earth, and notes of orange peel and dusty earth that linger on the finish. It’s a vibrant, tension-driven Brunello that should drink well for another decade or more. Drink 2026-2037.

When we talk about the history and soul of Montalcino, Fattoria dei Barbi is foundational. In a classic, perfectly balanced vintage like 2021, this estate is exactly where you want to look for traditional, unmanipulated brilliance. This is the benchmark annata, and it makes no apologies for being distinctly old-school.
This isn't a wine trying to be a modern fruit bomb. The nose is incredibly savory and deeply rooted in the earth. On the palate, it is all about tension and "crunchy" red fruit. It bypasses the sweet, fleshy mid-palate of the modernists and instead offers a firm, vertical spine of acidity. The tannins are traditional, and grippy, driving a mouthwatering, saline finish that begs for a roasted boar ragù, yum. It’s consistently the best value of the region.
