The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is the most intense and brooding wine in the range and pours a saturated red hue. The nose is deep and savory, with preserved blackberries, plum, lavender, resinous herbs, dark chocolate, and polished leather. Full-bodied, it has real drive and depth, with ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, structured finish that keeps unfolding with air. It’s a serious, age-worthy Brunello that deserves patience. Drink 2027-2055. (AF)

A muscular single-vineyard Brunello. Intense aromas of dark cherries, spearmint, lilacs and sandalwood. Full-bodied with a tight and compacted palate, chewy tannins and a fresh and tense finish. Needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2028. (JS)

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is a total spice box on the nose, with crushed roses, spiced orange peels, incense, raspberry, herbal tea leaves and hints of mint. More lifted and energetic than expected, it displays grace and youthful poise with mineral-inflected wild berry fruits. Vivid sour cherry lingers incredibly long through the finish as fine-grained tannins frame the experience and a bump of residual acidity keeps the mouth watering for more. (EG)

This is the newest jewel in the crown, a tribute to the founder of the estate. Sourced from a unique vineyard in the Sesta zone with vines that are over 50 years old, the "Giovanni Neri" offers a completely different expression than the Tenuta Nuova. If Tenuta Nuova is the power of the south, Giovanni Neri is the soul and history of the estate. It feels more "classic" in its profile, focusing on high-toned aromatics and finesse. The nose is soaring and complex, with notes of wild strawberry, blood orange, rose petal, and white pepper. On the palate, it is incredibly tense and vibrant, with a distinct, stony minerality that speaks to the old vines. The tannins are fine-grained and chalky, providing a vertical structure that drives the finish on and on. It is a profound, intellectual Brunello that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the region's absolute best. A rare and special wine.

Notes

The 2021 Giovanni Neri is a muscular and profound tribute to the estate's founder, sourced from a specific plot of 50-year-old vines in the southern sector of Montalcino. The nose is a complex "symphony" of aromatics, offering dark cherries, blood orange, and spearmint layered with sophisticated notes of lilacs and sandalwood. On the palate, it is full-bodied and chiseled, balancing a massive core of dark fruit with ultra-fine, creamy tannins and a vibrant, integrated acidity. The finish is deep and persistent, showing a savory mineral snap and extraordinary structural tension. A majestic and "complete" Brunello that combines the elegance of the 2021 vintage with the power and innovation characteristic of the Neri house style.
