Ancient vines, tiny millerand grapes, have delivered a wine of incredibly intense colour, a deep and imperial purple. You can smell those grape skins on the nose. As powerful a Suchots as I can remember yet not denatured by this intensity. Blueberries and bilberries, yielding to a precise, concentrated finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet, with pure black cherry and raspberry fruit, light floral and crushed violet scents. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with candied orange peel and wild strawberry fruit tones. Filigree tannins frame the finish that delivers the controlled opulence that you expect from a Les Suchots. This is superb.(NM)

Dark in color, the fresh oak is more noticeable than on the other Premier Crus, but it is still well judged. Dark chocolate folds into plum preserves, cassis and crushed stones. Smooth yet delineating tannins hug the notable mid-palate extract while pulsating freshness accompanies the mineral flourishes through the impressively persistent finish. Charles feels this is ready to rack again and will likely go to bottle soon.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is another of the standouts this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and textural, it's layered and seamless, with sweet structuring tannins and a long, perfumed finish. This is another strong set of wines from Charles Van Canneyt—but that won't surprise readers familiar with this estate's consistent excellence. Van Canneyt has had the reins here for over a decade now, and his approach has crystalized: the predominantly destemmed fruit, retained intact, is fermented in cement tanks for a classical maceration of two to three weeks. Élevage is in barrels now predominantly sourced from Cavin, with Cadus in a supporting role, and lasts fully 18 months in the domaine's cold cellar, with the exception of the Bourgogne Rouge, which is bottled before harvest. These uncomplicated methods, combined with an enviable palette of appellations planted with notably old vines, produce elegant, charming wines with impressive substance and aging potential. I've been buying them for my own cellar since my student days, so this is an address I warmly recommend.(WK)
