Review Date: 01/2025The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malo. This has a compelling mineral-driven bouquet with intense red berry fruit, razor-sharp delineation and poise. It's perhaps a level-up from the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush entry. It's velvety smooth in texture, with a patina of oak to be subsumed, but there is plenty of weight on the finish and a wonderful peppery aftertaste. It's one of the more powerful wines from the domaine, but it will give many years of pleasure. This is fabulous.(NM)

The glass resonates with this wine's perfume, long after its been poured back into the barrel. Chocolate-covered cherries, sweet raspberries, strawberry pie and damp earth hang on. The palate dazzles with zingy acidity, delicate tannins and long-lasting persistence. Classy and age-worthy, this comes from legacy vines at the northern end of the cru that are approximately 110 years old.

A full heady crimson purple. The nose bespeaks considerable generosity of fruit here. Without losing the precise refinement of Romanée St-Vivant. Once again, the balance of red and black with good acidity is perfectly managed, with additional fresh vigour right at the back. The summer pudding fruits return in style. Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

Both the 2023 Romanée-St.-Vivant and Richebourg were just a hair reductive at the time of my visit, but Charles noted that both wines were scheduled to be racked as soon as he returned from Asia. Being intrepid, he was only going for three days! With a bit of coaxing in the glass, the 2023 Romanée-St.-Vivant offers up a beautiful nose of cassis, black raspberries, Vosne spices, a superb base of soil, coffee bean, woodsmoke and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with superb transparency and grip, a sappy core of black fruit, zesty acids, fine-grained tannins and a long, balanced and very complex finish. 20301-2100.
