Int'l Wine Review

The 2023 Holocene Pyxis Chardonnay from the Eola-Amity Hills shines in the glass with a pale straw hue edged by a glistening rim. Raised in a combination of neutral French oak and amphora, it presents an arresting aromatic profile of ripe white nectarine, golden kiwi, and honeysuckle, layered with crushed seashells and a hint of citrus peel. The palate is broad and supple, showing impressive depth yet lifted by a spine of vibrant acidity that keeps the wine taut and alive. Notes of peach skin and Meyer lemon weave through the textured mid-palate, while mineral undertones of chalk and saline carry the wine into a long, structured finish. Highly recommended.

Owen Bargreen

Deep, concentrated and heady, the 2024 ‘Pyxis’ Chardonnay was sourced from the Eola-Amity Hills AVA and then stored in neutral French oak before bottling. Rich melon fruits mingle well with sweet peaches, wet stone and shades of lemon rind on the palate. Deep and rich with serious texture and underlying tension, showing salty nuances, this is drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2025-2037

Decanter

Undeniably captivating, the Pyxis is made with all native yeasts and spent nine months in amphora of both terracota and sandstone, where it was left untopped for six months to encourage the formation of a flor yeast. The result is a wonderfully oxidative, incredibly rich Chardonnay, with waxy, nutty aromatics and a palate of fleshy, ripe peaches, nectarines, and intense citrus oil, along with preserved lemon, alongside a wild umami, miso character that shows great interplay and complexity. A wonderful and compelling wine, completely outside the box.

Pacific NW Chardonnay aged in amphora combines the ancient and new in beautiful fashion. Pyxis smells like cold well water laced with minerals, along with honeysuckle, orange blossoms and macadamia nuts. The wine feels taught and crisp on the palate with its energizing acidity and flavors like orange zest, pineapple and the bite of yarrow.

This was a pleasant surprise. Since it's aged entirely in amphora (made from terracotta and sandstone) it has a slight nutty character that reminds me of the French Jura wines. It's an intriguing and uniquely satisfying Chardonnay that's a refreshing departure from the more common oaky/buttery style. Especially good with white meats and vegetable dishes.
