I've been reluctant to write this review, not because it was difficult, but because I occasionally find myself coveting certain products and feeling protective of them. Ultimately though, we have to share the very best stuff. I do feel a bit guilty for trying to keep this one to myself, because this is a true revelation. The wonderful little distillery in this border region of Armagnac is neither prestigious nor widely known, but over the years we've shown just how capable they are of producing exceptional quality. We've sold both young and old Grangerie, and it always delivers tremendous value. One of the most fascinating aspects is the diversity of flavors that develop in the little, centuries-old chapel where these barrels rest. Each cask can be completely different from the one sitting right beside it. There may be multiple sources for the wood, and I seem to recall a sneaky Hungarian oak barrel in the chai at one point, though perhaps that's not entirely legal for Armagnac. Of the hundred or so barrels we've tasted from this producer, none have been anything like this one. It stands entirely on its own. It may not resemble the very best Armagnac you've ever had, but it does remind me of the finest spirits I've experienced. In fact, it has more in common with top-tier single malt or great rum than what most would consider typical Armagnac. It's wildly tropical, loaded with coconut, and carries a thick, viscous texture. I'm not going to give a play-by-play of this cask because that almost does it a disservice. The complexity is too great for that. I've quietly poured this for some of my best customers, and every time I get the same call. You can hear the wide-eyed grin through the phone when they say, "it's so good." All I can say is, "I know. I know. I'm sorry."

Notes

This incredible single barrel from the wonderful producer in the northern sector of Armagnac has long been a staple on the shelves at K&L. Their Armagnacs, while not from the prestigious Bas-Armagnac region, offer finesse and depth well beyond their price point. While the quality is high across the board, we occasionally find small treasures in their wonderful 11th-century chapel, which has been converted into the domaine’s chai, and this barrel #53 from 1999 is one of the finest we have ever experienced. The unique aging environment, which is relatively dry and cool compared to a typical cellar, creates remarkable diversity of flavor, making each barrel truly unique. This beautiful single barrel offers a depth and complexity that is rarely achieved at this or any other age from the lesser regions. It is impossible to know exactly which factors aligned to elevate this brandy to such heights, but it stands as one of the most distinctive drinking experiences on our shelves at any price point.
