1940 Vaghi Vintage Armagnac
It's incredible that we have these war vintages at these ridiculous prices. When they were harvesting these grapes, the Germans had already entered Paris. Yet by the grace of god this spirit survived. A triumph by any measure. Let's have it. The nose is an impeccable mix of ultra ripe tropical fruit, the first to show the deep mango and passion fruit aromas that many seek in their hyper mature spirits. It's got incredible freshness and incredible complexity. Along side the deep fruity notes a beautiful black tea, varnished oak, espresso, ginger snaps and caramel sauce. On the palate, it's quite supple with no hard tannin whatsoever. Dense dark black fruit, black molasses, sweet dried fruit and exotic wood. Incredible value and a stupendous old brandy of the highest order.
