Lastly, and a tiny production cuvée based on 100% Grenache brought up in new barrels, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Plume Du Peintre reveals a saturated, almost inky purple color as well as a mammoth-sized bouquet of blackcurrants, bloody meats, lead pencil, tobacco, chocolate, and crushed stone. A monster of a wine in every way, it nevertheless has notable purity, a full-bodied, layered, seamless texture, no hard edges, and a thrilling finish that offers more and more minerality with time in the glass. You don't see wines like this often today, but this is a singular, heavenly Grenache that's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age and live for 30-40 years if stored correctly given its concentration, structure, and purity. Hats off to the team at Domaine de la Mordorée for continuing to push the envelope and making incredibly singular wines! 98+

Lovely nose of very ripe damson fruit and coffee bean oak. Surprisingly only medium-bodied for Châteauneuf, but so intense and concentrated, really vibrant and energetic. Tannins are fine, quite discreet but integral. Acidity is low but the freshness makes it feel balanced, and there's a lovely sense of finesse and a gathered, silk-rope finish. The oak is very well judged, it adds complexity, structure and length. Absolutely lovely wine; such class and will age brilliantly, and you don't sense the alcohol. You can drink young, and it will impress, but I would start from 2027. 2,300 bottles made. Old vines from La Crau, destemmed grapes. (MW)
