2025 Anonymous Wine Collective Oakville Sauvignon Blanc

This is a seriously classy bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that combines purity of fruit and sheer quaffability with next-level complexity and depth. The source of this wine is a parcel of old-vine Sauvignon Blanc in the heart of Oakville, a subregion of Napa where precious little Sauvignon Blanc is grown anymore, simply because folks can replant the land to Cabernet and get two to four times the price for the fruit or wine. However, some growers realize it’s better to keep world-class Sauvignon Blanc in the ground than plant a few more acres of average Cabernet if the soils aren’t right. We partnered with one such estate to make this wine. That old-vine fruit was then fermented and aged in a variety of different vessels to build texture and tension in the wine. Some was aged in 500L seasoned French oak. Some rested in concrete tank. Another portion aged in a handmade Italian terracotta amphora. I worked with the winemaker to combine these fascinating individual components into one cohesive blend, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. As a young wine, the vivacious tropical and ripe citrus fruits are at the forefront, but there’s also a wonderful mineral tension and crystalline quality to the wine. The portion that spent time in relatively neutral oak boosts the texture just a touch, giving the wine wonderful length and presence on the palate. Despite its relatively inexpensive price point, this is not your typical, simple, stainless-steel, straightforward Sauvignon Blanc. There’s real sophistication and nuance here. I can’t wait to see how this wine settles in; I think it will continue to improve over the coming weeks, months, and probably years. Cheers!

Sauvignon Blanc of this caliber at the same price as an entry level Napa bottling qualifies this offering as one of the best of the year. What sets this bottling apart is not the flawless fruit profile offering cara cara, calamansi, and star fruit, nor the technical acumen of the winery, which is unquestionably in the top tier for producers even in the area; it is actually the sumptuous texture provided by all the care and attention that went into it. Lip-smacking acidity is balanced effortlessly by creamy lees and mouthwatering minerals. Just like a perfectly crafted aperitif cocktail, this whets the palate and coaxes you into drinking more and more. You might burn through all of this over the course of the summer, but it will actually cellar beautifully, if you can delay gratification and hold onto a couple of bottles.

Our very own Ryan Woodhouse has done it again! This wine is an absolute showstopper at both the quality and price point. Upon opening, you'll be greeted by aromatics that scream "DRINK ME!" With notes of honeydew melon, under-ripe pear, and Granny Smith apple, the balance between fruit and acidity is absolutely beautiful. I award this wine 9.9/10 Matts

Ryan Woodhouse, super genius, has done it again. We've got another Anonymous wine in and it's an absolute clutch one for the summer. All from Napa's Oakville district and for under $25, this is quintessential and almost definitional California Sauvignon Blanc. Pretty and fully-fruited tropical nose this just smells like summer from the get, the palate is bright, super citrusy with a little bit of pineapple and passion-fruit around the edges and a great push of acid without going over the top or coming across as tart. This is refreshing, crisp, and a super lean 12.5%, exactly the kind of crushable and quaffable bottle that you need once the temperature starts edging up again. Get it nice and cold and finish the bottle in a sitting, you deserve it.

Notes

A small, hand-crafted lot, that I put together with a renowned 100-point winemaker. A complex and layered estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc from 30+ year-old vines in the heart of Oakville. Fermented and aged in various vessels to build texture and complexity. 60% was aged in seasoned 500L French Oak Puncheon, 30% Clay Amphorae, and 10% Concrete. Delicious now, but with cellaring potential for 5-8 years. A very special expression of Sauvignon Blanc that is true to its Oakville pedigree. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)
