The impeccable '83 vintage from Jean-Bon is one of the most exceptional brandies in the store at any price point. With only tiny amounts available, this should be top of the list for any serious brandy lover but also serves as an incredible alternative for those lovers of old Scotch who can't quite bring themselves to spend the money on an equivalently aged single malt. Let's have a taste. The color is a stunning russet (1.3). The nose, after the requisite aeration, is simply immense. At 53% you'd expect some heat, but instead you travel down and deep the rancio rabbit hole. Old leather, old fine wooden furniture, varnish, blackcurrant pastille, sticky fresh-rolled cigar, nocino, and black cherry. The palate is quite oily and full of nutty sweetness offering a bold and palate- enveloping thickness that is rare even in old brandy. Expect dark dried fruits, roasted chestnut, toasted clove, tense herbal structure and a long dry finish. The tannins are soft but present with an extremely long almost mentholated finish. A stupendous example of what the oldest school, unadulterated style of Armagnac can deliver.

The 1983 Domaine De Jean-Bon 42 Year shows exactly why long aging matters. Bottled at 53% ABV, it has plenty of presence, but it's controlled and confident rather than aggressive. On the nose, you get inviting aromas of caramel, well-worn oak, dried fruit, and soft baking spices. The palate is rich and smooth, with flavors of vanilla, toasted nuts, and a gentle depth that comes from decades in barrel. Everything feels well integrated, with warmth that builds gradually instead of overpowering. The finish is long, clean, and very satisfying. This is the kind of Armagnac that encourages you to slow down and pay attention. It doesn't rely on flash or novelty - just balance, maturity, and character. At 42 years old, it feels fully realized, and it's the kind of bottle you remember long after the glass is empty.

Notes

The early '80s stocks from Domaine de Jean-Bon are some of the most unusual and intriguing on the market today. This old school estate is a true working farm with only 6.5 hectares under vine, mostly planted to Baco 22a (Baco Blanc). The above ground dry cellar has concrete floors and retains heat in the summer and winter, keeping the alcohol levels very high. They use both Gascogne and Limousin oak and do not work the brandies regularly or reduce so these brandies are extremely complex but need plenty of air to achieve their full potential. This old vintage is particularly powerful, bottled at cask strength without any additions or reduction at an impressive 53% alcohol by volume. Expect a beautiful, rustic style designed for the most experienced lovers of old spirits.
