1978 Giacomo Conterno "Monfortino" Barolo Riserva
100
Vinous
Review Date: 02/2015Arguably the most profound wine made here, the 1978 Monfortino is highly anticipated. Still virile and imposing, the 1978 stains the palate with dark plum, graphite, incense, scorched earth and balsamic, mentholated notes. A Barolo of magnificent depth and structure, the 1978 Monfortino captures this historic vintage at its best. Interestingly, the 1978 was made from vines that were just four years old. It was also the first vintage Conterno made from their Cascina Francia vineyard, which they acquired in 1974.

Notes
This is the famous and justly coveted Monfortino Barolo, which, depending on the vintage, spends between 10 and twelve years in wood before release. Years! This wine is immortal and unbelievably memorable. According to Robert Parker: "Conterno, whose wines I have followed since the mid-sixties, is unquestionably the quintessential traditionalist when it comes to Barolo. No concessions are made to modern day tastes. Consequently, his wines are among the most concentrated, as well as the most rustic and tannic. From time to time there have also been levels of volatile acidity that modern day technocrats would consider obscene, but which actually can add to the wine's complexity and character, up to a point."
