1964 Giacomo Conterno "Monfortino" Barolo Riserva Speciale

Review Date: 10/2010The 1964 Monfortino is a great vintage of this legendary wine, and one I have only had the good fortune to taste on one occasion. The wine is brilliant on both the nose and palate, and at age forty-four is just beginning to show a bit of the transparency down to the soil of a mature Monfortino. The bouquet is deep and superb, as it offers up notes of black cherries, balsamic vinegar, bonfires, tar, fennel, red curry and with extended aeration, hints of the red fruit that will come with further bottle age. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and still fairly powerful in the inimitable Monfortino style, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil inflection, and still a bit of tannin to carry it on the very long, tangy and palate-staining finish. A great Monfortino that I might be tempted to still give a handful of more years in the cellar. It will be very interesting to see if this eventually overtakes the magical normale from this legendary vintage. (Drink between 2010-2050) 95+ points

Notes
*****+ Splendidly balanced, complete wine, intensely scented, perhaps a little too hard, suitable for a long life.
