Found North "Season 6 - Cherry Liqueur Finish #6138" Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Canadian Whisky (750ml)

Review Date: 03/2026

For the record this is Batch 6 Cask 6138 A combo of 12Yr Rye, 21 Yr Rye, 15Yr Corn, 17 Yr Corn, 22 Yr Corn and 25Yr Corn – this makes the composition 49% Rye, 48% Corn and 3% Barley. Among all the brands that we actively follow right now, Found North is one of our favorites. We have been fans for a long time and when the opportunity presented itself to us to obtain a barrel, we were excited to say the least. Immediately this cask spoke to us – at least on paper – a cherry liqueur finished product could have easily been aged too long. Upon sampling, we were all very surprised at how subtle the liqueur showed. We equated this whisky to a Manhattan but only in the best – least cocktail like way. More as if you poured a shot of whisky into a glass that previously served a Manhattan – again subtle.

If you want to see just how transformative a finishing barrel can be, look no further. The Found North team continues to uncover exceptional spirits and showcase blending skills that are rarely seen from our neighbors to the north. This particular release is a wild one. Finishing the blend in cherry liqueur casks might suggest an overly sweet result, but that is not the case here. The cherry is certainly present, yet it weaves seamlessly into the hearty grains and earthy notes that form the backbone of the whisky. Fruit still leads the charge, with the nose offering rich cherry preserves and baked Fuji apples, followed by cassia bark, kola nut, and cedar cigar box. On the palate, this is far from a cherry bomb. Spice does much of the heavy lifting, shaping the profile into something closer to a cherry-spiced compote with a savory edge. A peppery basil note appears briefly before fading behind cinnamon and clove, hinting at how beautifully this would pair with roasted duck or a creamy brie. The spices carry through the finish, which is rustic, comforting, and exactly what you would want while sitting beside a fire in an old Canadian log cabin on a snowy winter night. Another stellar expression from one of the most impressive blending houses working today, and further proof that properly constructed Canadian whisky can stand shoulder to shoulder with its southern counterpart.

Notes

The unreal run that Found North has racked up over the last several years is truly unprecendented. The two brothers running the show get whisky and the whisky business like few other founders in the industry today. They know just that every bottle of whisky you produce must absolutely astonish the customer who eventually opens it. They've created a new style of product, with a nod to several great innovators before them, that transcends traditional whisky categories. Using extremely high quality matured stock from Canada, exceptional wood and a deft palate, they've developed a system to create world class old whiskies that can stand with the best of them. We've always said YES, to any offer from Found North, so when they dangled two single casks for us this year, we snapped up the two best. These monster whiskies are distilled in Canada aged seperately before being blended and further maturation in high quality barrels. The resulting mashbill for each barrel is 50% 12yr Rye (w/ Malted Barley, 3% 21yr Rye, 13% 15yr Corn, 3% 17yr Corn (New Wood), 27% 22yr Corn, 4% 25yr Corn. These single barrels could not techinically be classified as eithe bourbon or rye, if they'd been distilled here, yet this delicious barrel #6118 delivers the best of both -a bomb of spice, sweet red fruit, dusty earth and sweet oak. We're proud to continue supporting Found North. Bottled at cask strength without any diluition, chillfiltration or additions of any kind.
