2023 Cayuse "Cailloux Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah

Grace, rather than power, defines this wine, a Syrah whose poise and aromatic altitude place it near the top of the lineup. The 2023 Cayuse Cailloux Vineyard Syrah from the Walla Walla Valley, drawn from vines established in 1997 and farmed biodynamically since 2002, includes a small touch of Viognier and spent 18 months in mostly neutral oak puncheons. That élevage and co-fermented lift bring an alluring perfume of crushed blueberries, tangerine zest, white flower petals, wet stones, and a faint suggestion of singed herbs and cured charcuterie. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and exquisitely detailed, with lucid blue plum and pink grapefruit pith threaded through a crunchy mineral line that gives the wine tension and uncommon finesse. Serve it with duck breast glazed in pomegranate molasses. 315 cases made. Highly recommended.
