The 2022 Albillo Mayor hails from the Atauta Valley in Soria, Ribera del Duero, specifically from a vineyard planted in the late 19th century. Yellow with a golden sheen. The oxidative, fruity nose offers peach, acacia, fennel, aniseed and stewed pear notes. Dry and ample with a chalky texture and tart acidity, the finish is vibrant, satisfyingly lengthy and complex. This is a delicious white from Ribera del Duero. (JH)

Cooked lemons and apples with some hot stones and grilled herbs on the nose. Full-bodied and quite phenolic on the palate, showing some nice tannins and a flavorsome mid-palate. Quite long and ample. Drink now or hold. (ZS)

Their white 2022 Albillo Mayor was produced with grapes from their vineyards and from external suppliers, so it has grown in volume. 2022 was a warm and dry year of low yields and an early harvest to avoid over-ripeness and loss of freshness. For the first time ever, they started harvesting in September in this cooler part of Ribera del Duero. This has ripe fruit and an opulent palate but with a balanced 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.18. It has aromas of pit fruit and wet stones. It's a blend of three different fermentations, with more or less cold soak and skin contact to come to a balanced white aged in used 500- and 600-liter barrel and some tinajas. (LG)

In 2010, a white wine joined the lineup at Atauta, made from Albillo Mayor vines that are interplanted with the old-vine Tinto Fino. While these were once used to conferment along with the red grapes, the winemaking team at Dominio de Atauta decided that they could stand on their own. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large format neutral casks, the wine is bursting with ripe golden pear, apple, apricot and lemon oil notes, enhanced by a round, almost textural mouthfeel. Dry on the palate, this wine has the considerable weight, though, making it a great wine for soft cheeses or creamy sauces.

Notes

Located in the village of Atauta, in the coolest, highest-elevation eastern section of Ribera del Duero, Dominio de Atauta boasts an average vine age of 85 years, with many pre-phylloxera vines topping 120 years. Each of these ancient vines is extremely low yielding, with less than a bottle per vine of finished wine – a miniscule amount in today’s world that often prioritizes quantity over quality. Extreme temperature differences, with very hot summers and very cold winters, further limits yields as springtime frost is always a danger. The result is wines of stunning concentration and complexity, balanced by fine-grained tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. The 2022 vintage in Ribero del Duero was very dry and warm, but the eastern location of Dominio del Atauta handled the conditions with ease not seen elsewhere in the appellation. The wines have a gorgeous, ready-to-drink quality, yet are firmly structured and marked by a fresh acidity resulting from the high elevation.
