The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is a model of elegance, power and complexity. This displays a blend of crushed rocks and balsam herbs, giving way to notes of dried violet, fresh mint and black cherry. It's silken and serene, washing across the palate with waves of mineral-tinged dark red fruits and exotic spice, all guided by a core of tantalizing acidity. Despite its depth and concentration, this finishes remarkably fresh, with grippy tannins lingering under an air of clove and tobacco. Classic to the core, the Bassolino di Sopra is coming along beautifully yet still many years away from its drinking window. Look out for the 2019, which will be released in the spring of 2026. (EG)
